Overview
The intent of this project was the restoration and conservation of twelve (12) bronze monuments and plaques throughout the Cabrillo National Monument. Unique in its location at Point Loma outside of San Diego, California, these exterior statuary bronze elements face near constant exposure to environmental elements, including salt sprays. The existing conditions showed signs of extreme deterioration on plaque faces, with textile displays showing significant wear from hand-contact. Of particular interest was a central sculpture at the Whale Overlook, featuring a mother humpback whale and calf, sightings of which are a major draw to the park and point. This sculpture had once been painted, with all coatings in varied states of failure or missing. All bronzes were carefully cleaned and restored to the artist's original intent, utilizing the least intrusive means possible. This project was completed on schedule and on budget in a park that was continually open to the public.
