Overview
The focus of this project was the restoration of a variety of surfaces on and within the historic Fort Belvoir Chapel. Beginning on the exterior, AAR undertook the restoration of all historic stained glass windows within the space, fabricating and installing temporary protection that allowed all sash to be removed and stored for restoration, while enclosing the space for continued interior work. Lead based Paint (LBP) was detected and abatement procedures were undertaken on the exterior siding, with extreme care taken to ensure the safety of the public, crews, and protection of the surrounding environment. Areas of deteriorated siding were repaired with replicated items and dutchman's repairs and the entire exterior was re-coated. A minor structural repair was conducted at the foundation, where water damage was found. Interior work consisted of the restoration of historic millwork, doors, and pews. AAR was a critical subcontractor for Biscayne Contractors. This project was completed on schedule and on budget and was of significance for the Installation of Fort Belvoir, not only for its history, but for its ongoing use as a location for member services and weddings.
