Overview
The intent of this project was to clean the exterior facade of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors - Eccles Building. The prominence and location of this building (21st and Constitution, NW) required special measures to ensure that the occupants were not disturbed and the security of the space unimpeded. AAR undertook a massive scaffolding effort to heat the space, allowing for work in cold temperatures, when the building experienced less public foot-traffic. The work included the cleaning of all architectural White Georgian Marble elements. Micro-Fissure Encapsulation (MFE) was completed on eroded marble surfaces of stairs, walls, and sculptures to restore the existing marble to a smooth, original surface. The MFE protocol, and its proper application, was developed, by AAR, in concert with the Federal Reserve conservation staff, in house Architect, and with Consultant Oehrline & Associates, Washington, D. C. This development was required as the result of updated environmental regulation that outlawed the use of commonly used consolidants. The developed MFE composition complies with all current District of Columbia and U. S. E. P. A. Regulations and is currently in service without failure.
Additional work included miscellaneous re-pointing of existing mortar with matching, miscellaneous caulking, and bronze cleaning, re-patination, polishing, lacquering, and waxing of all bronze elements of the site. This project was completed on schedule and on budget in a highly secured and continuously occupied space.
